About Autism
Autism is a neurological disorder and, contrary to popular belief, it is not rare. It usually strikes in the first two years of life and can cause severe impairment in communication, cognition and social interaction. Though many autistic children make great progress through early intervention, the majority will never learn to speak. Occurring in one in every 166 births, autism is the second most common developmental disability, following mental retardation and surpassing cerebral palsy. It is more common than multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis or childhood cancer. Autism is a national crisis affecting over 1,500,000 Americans and costing the nation over $90 billion a year, yet, it receives less than 15% of the federal funding of these other childhood disorders.
About Cure Autism Now
Founded in 1995, the Cure Autism Now (CAN) Foundation is an organization of parents, clinicians and leading scientists committed to accelerating the pace of biomedical research in autism through research, education and outreach.
About WALK NOW
WALK NOW is a 5K (3.1 mile) family walk and autism community resource fair heightening public awareness and raising money to fund autism research. The resource fair includes educational resources, therapists, schools, recreational organizations and creative child-friendly activities. Proceeds from WALK NOW support Cure Autism Now’s mission to find the causes, effective treatments, prevention and a cure for autism. Over the course of 2005, nationwide WALK NOW events raised over $4.1 million.
